It might be a little early, but my mom asked me what I wanted for Christmas this weekend. I didn’t know at the time, but I’ve been doing some thinking…
I was about to email her yesterday, to let her know that I kind of want a set of special occasion china because we never got any for our wedding. Old fashioned is coming back these days, and I would really love some beautiful dishes to serve with on holidays.
But then I realized that maybe I don’t want a set of china. Maybe I just want a mismatched collection of pretty dishes, ones that I can interchange and collect over the years.
So I think that’s what I’m going to do. Every time I go into a thrift store or antique shop or to the flea market, I’m going to keep an eye out for pretty dishes to add to my collection. Because I would just love to have some pretty table settings, like these…

Have any of you done this before? If not, do you have a set of special occasion china that you use?

Never thought it could look so lovely! I think your idea is brilliant.
That's a great idea! I myself have crystal instead of china. Timeless, and can also be layered with fun place mats and colorful napkins...!
Those pieces are really pretty! My husband and I didn't register for china...instead, we have an everyday setting and a nicer / sleeker everyday setting from Pottery Barn.
I adore the mismatched look! I have a set of china from my great aunt that I have in our garage but I haven't seen since I was about 13. I have Fiesta ware but I would love a mismatched set of china! Maybe when we have more space, but I'm worried about them breaking in a move!
Those pictures are wonderful and that's such a great idea. Just make sure you stick to a theme or color palette!
This is such a fabulous idea! I would enjoy this more than and matching set.
I have mismatched china and I LOVE IT. When I got married I just couldnt stand all the match-y stuff so for one of my showers, all the women who were important in my life (mom, grandmas, aunts, sisters in law ect) bought a setting of whatever they wanted. I ended up with family pieces, antique pieces and even some 'divorce' china. I love each and every one. I really should write about it one day!
That's what I do and I love it :) Each piece is special and it means so much more to me than just a set from the store that looks like a million other sets.
My mom jusst gave me an old set of "family" dishes that I love. I don't want to actually use them though because they have such senitmental value! I think your thrift shop idea is fantastic :)
this is so adorable..i'm definitely saving this pictures to my 'inspiration' folder
