{wedding wednesday: trend alternatives}

Happy Wedding Wednesday everyone! I hope you all have your own wedding posts ready to link up! Before we get to that, however, I thought I would share some of my favorite alternatives to the most popular wedding trends right now.

Following a trend isn't a bad thing, obviously (it's a trend for a reason), but there are so many ways to make your wedding unique and special for you. Not only that, but trends come and go...wouldn't it be great to be ahead of the trend?

Peonies are my number one requested flower for weddings, for obvious reasons. They're absolutely gorgeous! There are a few drawbacks to this pretty bloom, however. First of all, they're expensive. Like really, really expensive. They can be hard to find, even in the middle of their peak season, and there is a pretty small window of time where they bloom.

If you're set on that romantic, sweet type of flower, I would highly encourage you to look into Juliet garden roses, dinner plate dahlias, ranunculus, and mums.* You never know...you may find something you like more!

*I have to thank my friend Amy from Stella Bloom Designs for these suggestions! I don't know what I would do without her...

Mason jars are everywhere right now, and I won't deny that I've used them for my own parties and events. They're inexpensive, versatile, and have that perfect rustic touch. But have you thought of using milk bottles instead? Or collecting bottles of different types and sizes to use for your centerpieces?

At a time when barn weddings have never been more popular, it's no wonder that burlap has taken center stage. It's very inexpensive, and an easy DIY. If you want that rustic theme for your tables, yet want to be different, you can always rent wood tables and top them with lace runners or overlays. It's romantic, yet has an edge to it at the same time. This has to be one of my very favorite alternatives!

Neutrals of all types are popular this year, though grey has seriously taken over. I see more grey suits and dresses these days than khaki or ivory, and I love it! There are few options for neutrals, though I do like to consider navy a neutral color. You can pair almost any other color with it, and it looks natural and put together. My favorites right now are pairing navy with yellow, kelly green, or ivory.

What are your favorite wedding trend alternatives right now?
There are no real rules for Wedding Wednesday, I just ask that your post be wedding related. It doesn’t need to be the same topic that I’m posting about. I also ask that you try to visit a few other blogs to say hi, and I would love it if you would use my button (found here).

I'm getting married next year October and was thinking about peonies, but they aren't available in our country, so I'm going all out indigenous with our flowers.

Also, my fiance said that he is either wearing a black or grey suit and I can't convince him otherwise! haha

I love your suggestions Joelle! Especially the milk bottles - I did mason jars at my wedding, and use them for SO many things in everyday life...but I agree, they are so overdone. PS - Navy suits, very HOT! xx -b.

Great tips! I'm totally with you on ditching mason jars and going with different sizes and shapes on glass. That is what I'm doing for my center pieces, and I love how they've turned out so far. I'm recycling the glass from things I already have, so its even better that I'm not going out to pay for tons of money for identical jars.

On flowers, I'm just not a fan of flowers from flower shops. They are beautiful, but we're planning to use hand picked wildflowers, since they'll be in abundance during May. :)

Garden roses seem to have become the new trend where I am. I love them! One of my favorite bouquets of last summer was a mix of garden roses, hydrangeas and gardenias. It smelled amazing. Love the milk bottle idea too. I haven't seen that yet.

Oh, garden roses are adorable! I love all of these ideas too. How fun and creative. :)

Definitely tucking the post away in my subconscience for my big day. Love the "hoe to be trendy but different" tweaks!

This has to be one of my favorite wedding wednesday posts! Love the idea of swapping garden roses for peonies and milk bottles for mason jars... pure genius :)

we're absolutely doing #1 - most of the flowers I like are out of season and/or very expensive, so we've swapped them out for lesser-known but gorgeous varieties. it's a nice (and cheaper!) way to be a little different :)

beautiful and smart suggestions! my sis had a late august wedding in northern michigan this summer and peonies were off the table. we substituted in garden roses and they were GORGEOUS! absolutely gorgeous!

I love all of these alternatives! I'll definitely be thinking about these while I plan.

I love the idea of milk bottles!! I've never been a big mason jar girl, but the milk bottles are super cute.

I used pink garden roses instead of peonies for my wedding this past August. They were beautiful!

I am using garden roses in place of peonies in my bouquet :) It's a great and aesthetically similar alternative.

i absolutely adore navy & yellow together, & i wish i would have used those as my wedding colors, rather than grey & yellow [even though i still love this combo as well]. i love the alternatives you've shared today, especially the wood + lace & the garden roses! i think i actually prefer the garden roses to the peonies. as usual, a great & informative wedding post from you this week!

These are some great tips! Tucking these tips away for safe keeping ;)

love these suggestions!! peonies were out of season (and too expensive) but the garden roses looked so very lovely in their place. plus, i felt like my original idea of a pale pink all-peony bouquet was so overdone. also LOVING wood+lace for making a rustic venue feel elegant. xoxo

This is a great post! Love your suggestions, I am definitely getting over the burlap trend and looked into wood tables but they were soooo expensive. :( I love that look though.

Very smart post!! You're right - you never know what you may end up liking more! I also love navy as a neutral - especially when paired with yellow!

I seriously love these alternatives! Looking back I really wish I would have done navy suits instead of black. When I went in to meet with my florist, she said that peonies weren't available and I was sad at first, but I ended up loving my flowers!

Instead of following a trend, use trends as your “inspiration” then find alternatives that reflect you and your fiance. Love the milk bottles.
