{wedding wednesday: protect yourself}

Find great wedding magazines at Value Mags.

I got an email from my best friend (who just got engaged) with a link to this article. As a wedding planner, the thought that a wedding vendor would just steal that much money, and ruin the biggest day of multiple lives, is absolutely horrifying. I just can't even imagine what these people must have gone through, to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a promise that your wedding will be absolutely perfect, and finding out that it was just a scam.

It got me thinking about how you can protect yourselves from shady wedding vendors and companies, so something like this doesn't happen to you. I know this isn't the most exciting topic, but I promise that you'll be thankful for it if something (God forbid) does happen on your wedding day.
Here are a few resources and more information for you about what you can do to protect yourself on your wedding day:

1 // WedSafe is one of the most well known and well respected companies for wedding insurance. They also offer liability insurance, in addition to cancellation or postponement insurance.

2 // Here is some more information from the Knot on wedding insurance, and why you would need it.

3 // Katy Carrier is an attorney for wedding professionals, and she has shared some contract basics.

4 // Offbeat Bride has a great post with information about copyright, and how it applies to your wedding photos.

5 // I know it isn't a happy subject, but here is a little information about prenups.
There are no real rules for Wedding Wednesday, I just ask that your post be wedding related. It doesn’t need to be the same topic that I’m posting about. I also ask that you try to visit a few other blogs to say hi, and I would love it if you would use my button (found here).

So sad that someone would turn others' wedding day into a scam. It makes sense that people think they can get away with that...but so sickening. If only everyone tried to make their way through life honestly!

Such an important post for brides-to-be - I have heard of a few weddings that the couple lost out because the venue had burned down or flooded just before their wedding... Or there was no electricity on the day and the venue had no generator! Very sad :( We recently had a scam with a local Bridal Shop who imported dresses from the US - she took orders and 50% deposits but never delivered the dresses. These poor girls...

God, what a NIGHTMARE. Thanks for posting about this - it's so important to be practical amongst all the romance. We took out insurance for our wedding day - it's the best £130 that I've ever spent that I hope to have, in effect, thrown away at the end of it all!

This must be my biggest fear! I have heard of so many people who was scammed in their services, particularly the flowers! Makes me shudder.

It is so horrible that this stuff has to happen. I've actually known Deniz for many years and my heart went out to her and her new husband when all of this happened. When things like this happen it makes me glad I eloped. I can't imagine spending $20k on a wedding that never happened due to greedy, heartless people like that.

Thank you for sharing the smart ways to go about these things. Your blog has to be my favorite resource for wedding info/topics that are truthful and honest. No fluff. There is too many people trying to hide things these days and the wedding industry is no different.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that article about photography copyright -- it's so very true that "people ... believe that because they are the subjects of the photos, or because they are the ones who hired the photographer, then they are the ones who hold the copyright in the photos," but they're missing the gist of what copyright means in the first place. This might be a future blog post of mine, just because I KNOW it's a misunderstood concept! And overall, this is such an excellent topic for wedding planning. You totally rock, girl -- you went from not knowing what you'd write about (yesterday on the drive home, haha) to picking a completely relevant and incredibly important subject matter. NICE!! :)

i read the article you linked at the top of the post, & i cannot BELIEVE people would actually scam couples who are trying to get married. not only is it a stressful, emotion-laden time in these peoples' lives, but finances are often a point of contention. to steal money from people in this way - & exploit the fact that they are willing to spend money on a celebration of love - is disgusting. bravo to you for bringing awareness of this topic. i pinned your 'protect yourself on your wedding day' graphic, because people need to realize this is a thing that happens!
