{a halloween post}

Maybe it's ironic that I'm posting this as I'm watching the original Halloween, or maybe it just inspired this post. Or, maybe because it's finally starting to feel like fall (it got down to 60 degrees today), but I thought I'd post a little about Halloween. Which, for me, isn't always all that exciting...

I can watch Halloween because it isn't really all that scary. I'm actually a big fan of old scary movies, like the Amityville Horror, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and anything Stephen King (of course). A few others that I love: the Omen, Scream, Silence of the Lambs, and the Ring (not necessarily old, but still newer classics). Put me in front of something made today, however, and I'll shield my eyes and cover my ears. I love the complex stories and psychological components of these old movies. Now, it's all about blood and guts and gore, which I'm not a fan of.

I don't do haunted houses. The last time I tried to go in one, I was fifteen and ran out the emergency exit crying. I've stayed far, far away from any "haunted" place since. But here's something you may not know about me: I LOVE those terrible shows on the Travel Channel that feature the scariest haunted houses in the country. Seriously, one of my favorite parts of October, hands down! It's probably because I hate going into haunted houses, but I still want to see how creative people are and what they put inside. At the same time, I can never understand why someone would actually want to scare themselves so badly. It just doesn't seem like fun to me.

What about you? What are your favorite scary movies? When was the last time you went to a haunted house?

When it comes to anything scary my motto is "AVOID!!" I just don't have the guts ;)

Couldn't agree more on the scary movie thing! I love the old classics {the Shining is my favorite!}, but hate all the blood and gore that seems to come with every new scary movie :/

I am definitely one to scream in haunted house, but most of the time is spent hiding behind someone or shutting my eyes. I'm a fan of Halloween, but can do without the gory movies.

I love The Shining! Definitely one of my favorites, although my fiance has yet to see it, which is unacceptable.

I am so much of a chicken it's ridiculous. I don't do anything haunted/scary - none of it! I can't! My poor husband - he enjoys a random scary movie every once in a while but unless he wants to be kept up by me for the next several weeks he knows it's better to just watch a thriller or adventure movie instead ;)

Haha I'm glad I'm not the only one out there! I change the channel so fast if something scary comes on!

LOVE the Shining! That's definitely one of my favorite classics :)

Ha, I'm impressed that you actually go in haunted houses! You might be the one to scream in them, but I'd be the one bawling my eyes out....

He hasn't seen it! It's definitely a horror classic, and one of my favorites too!

Haha my husband loves scary things too, but he knows better than to take me to a haunted house. He's the one to turn the TV off sometimes too, if he knows I'll get scared! Probably because he knows he'll have to stay up with me for the next few weeks too :)

No, no, no. No horror movies, no haunted houses. I'll stick with Hocus Pocus thankyouverymuch.

Unknown said...

Hahaha I just watched Hocus Pocus the other night! Definitely a great Halloween movie for people like us ;)

I love haunted houses, but none are ever scary enough for me :( Texas Chainsaw is my all-time fave horror movie. It's more horrifying I think because it's young people on a road trip and seems semi-believable.

one time i peed my pants a little in a haunted house. okay. more than a little. like real pee came out. I was 21.

i don't do well in haunted houses either, but like you, i'm interested in reading/watching shows about them. i'm pretty sure 'the ring' scarred me for life. i think that's one of the scariest & most psychologically disturbing movies i've ever seen. oh yeah, & 'the strangers.'

Oh I'm totally with you, I can't do haunted houses at all. Not my idea of a good time.

Scary enough?! Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa??? Is that such a thing??? Texas Chainsaw is good, but the real question is...the original (best!) or the remake (ugh...)???

Unknown said...

This sounds like me. Except, I'd probably pee my pants before even getting inside the haunted house...

The Ring is absolutely terrifying! I don't know that I could watch it now, but I really loved it as a teenager. Such a good psychological story!

Unknown said...

Right?! It just isn't fun for me at all...

You should do a haunted tour here in town. I went on it a few years ago and it was super scary! And by "super scary", I mean "somewhat entertaining, totally mediocre, and not even remotely scary."

I canNOT do scary movies of any sort! I hate being scared. The extent of my Halloween movie watching are Tim Burton movies and Hocus Pocus. :)

Unknown said...

Haha I'm actually okay with "real" haunted places (maybe because I don't really believe in ghosts)...I'm more afraid that people are going to *try* to scare me! I've seen the haunted tours around here though...definitely open to trying them one day :)

Haha, I love haunted houses & scary movies BUT I'm not always in the mood to watch scary movies though.

Unknown said...

Yes! Nightmare Before Christmas is one of our favorite Halloween movies too :)

Unknown said...

Haha I can see that! I sometimes crave watching scary movies (though I never do, obviously)!

When I was younger, I used to love scary movies. Now, I don't go near anything scary. I'm such a thinker and my brain never shuts off so if I see something creepy, there's no way I'll sleep.
I remember reading something a long time ago looking at the culture around seeking scares and how all around the world there are people living in fear not because they choose it but because their situation warrants it whether it be war, spousal abuse, etc. It questioned why people would want to be scared for fun - I suppose I'm sort of that mentality.

That's an interesting way to think about it...I don't like being scared either, and I don't know why someone would...but it does make you think about it in a different way when you realize how many people are living in real fear!
