Thursday's Thoughts

Is that too cheesy? I mean, it works…

As  much as I try planning out my blog posts, sometimes a thought just hits me, and I need to run with it right then, or else I lose it. And that's what's happening now.

You all know of my distaste for the Knot community forums. The women there are mean and bitter and just not nice. I follow the Knot on Facebook, and they posted a question from the forums about having a food truck at your wedding. We had the In-N-Out truck at our wedding, and it was amazing! We didn't hear any complaints about our food choice, and it fit really well with the feeling of the reception. It started at about eight in the evening, and lasted only about three hours, so we didn't really have enough time for a full, sit-down meal.

Anyway, a lot of the women on the Knot forums, and those commenting on the Knot's status on Facebook are just being plain mean about this question. They say that it isn't classy enough for a wedding, even going so far to say that it's tacky. But as I started getting irritated at their answers, and thinking that they really need to be more open minded about things like this, I realized something: maybe I'm the one that needs to be more open minded.

The internet, when you truly think about it, is really amazing when it comes to socializing. You make so many connections with different types of people, relationships that wouldn't be there without blogging or Facebook or community forums such as the one on the Knot. But I can't lie; I get irritated. A lot.

There are a lot of negative people in the world, people who just love to hear themselves talk. We all have a right to be annoyed with them, but that doesn't give them the right to affect our lives negatively. Not everybody is going to agree with me, and that's alright. And those who don't agree with me may not be very nice when giving their opinion, and that's alright too. It doesn't mean that I need to value what they have to say. And I won't lie: if you throw around words carelessly, I won't respect them. But if you present your opinion in a thoughtful manner, then I will take it into consideration {though I can't guarantee that I will agree with you}.

I have too much going on in my life to waste my time caring about the mean things that strangers say on the internet. If a blog I follow says something not nice, I don't have to follow them. It's my choice. And if I'm miserable and irritated and annoyed, it's my own damn fault.

I've realized a lot about things like this, since graduating college and getting married. I have a life that I love, and someone who cares about me more than anything else. And that means a lot more to me than petty drama {which I refuse to deal with anymore} and the opinion of someone that I don't even know. And this blog has been something more amazing than I ever thought possible. It doesn't need to be polluted with negativity.

Oh, and a little advice to all of you nasty trolls saying that my In-N-Out truck was "tacky:" Creativity isn't overrated at weddings; it's appreciated. Because I guarantee that people will remember my hamburgers more than your tasteless chicken and rice.

TK does have a lot of mean people, but I got lucky i think, with my month board. I've never met most of the girls, but i've stayed in contact with about half the ladies over the past two years. I'm actually traveling to Boston next week to stay a few days with one of the girls I've grown close with.
But they really are so judgmental about the details of a wedding on some boards and I just think that is so rude. You shouldnt have to deal with that while you are planing your wedding. And you are right. People remember the creativity at weddings. Dont let them get to you :)

You tell em' girl! You aren't the only person I know who has had the in-n-out truck at their wedding. I know one girl who had traditional catering and the truck...and she said that nobody even touched the catered food!

Great post! And, I'd be in heaven if I was at a wedding with the In-N-Out truck!!! It's so much better than most food at weddings!

When I had my wedding, I wanted to just have a hog roast and nothing else for our reception. Sadly because of price I couldn't (not that we couldnt have saved up, but for the number of people who were coming etc it would have been a waste of a pig really!) but you know, as greasy and fatty and, you know, one dimensional that might have been (so...anyone for pork sandwiches and wedding cake?) if I could have justified the price vs the number of people at the wedding, it would have been there! Instead the pub where we had the reception put on a buffet spread of sandwiches, pizza and Costco curry, and everyone just helped themselves between sipping pints of cheap bitter. Weddings are what you make of it - our service was solemn and formal and religious and classy...and our reception was a whole lot of fun!

Oh girl, just wait til you are on the bump. I got on it for like a week and they had message forums...everyone was SO MEAN!! If you asked a question, people treated others like they were idiots. Obviously, people wanted the online community to be about to share and relate--not be talked down to.

Loved this post! I feel like people go on forums sometimes just to be negative. Why do they feel as if they need to put someone else's creativity down?

I think your wedding is "your wedding". Some people dream of having the "typical wedding", and some people dream of having a wedding that fits them, not what is expected of them. Neither is wrong, and those ladies who don't like the idea of a food truck at a wedding, haven't been to a wedding with one yet.

I LOVE that you had In N Out! That's the best idea ever! As a guest I would have totally dug that!

You had In 'n Out at your wedding? That's fantastic!! I'd have loved that. Good for you to be your own person, and not letting others bring you down. Who has time to deal with all that? Not worth it. I love your attitude Joelle! It's people like you who go far, not only because of your talents, but because of your awesome attitude :)

I'm so glad you wrote this. I've found that as I've gotten older and more mature, I find myself staying away from certain venues that are often full of negativity. As I'm sure you saw on The Knot forums, most discussions turn into something that is so completely off from the original topic. People start bad-mouthing one another, etc.

Anyway, I completely agree with you AND I think your idea to have an In-N-Out truck was genius! I would have loved that!!

Spot on!! I love love love social networking and blogging, but I am experiencing the cattiness and judgment out there- it's worse than real frenemies! :) Anyway, this is real AND I'm totally jealous of your In-N-Out truck! Haters gonna hate. :) But we don't have to be one of them!

Hi Hun! Thank you so much for visiting. I've been reading your blog and saw that you are starting your own event planning business and I am doing the same. But I gave myself more than a week to do so, as it takes months to create the exact brand/marketing that you want. Take your time and believe in your vision. I'm coming up with the same roadblocks and would love to talk shop about our mutual endeavors. email me! xox
